Update- Long Prepares to Settle Out of Court

(source Prime Writer New)
The first hearing was held in the case of accused Bishop Eddie Long Friday and it appears that the case may be settled out of court. Attorneys for both sides said they want to avoid a trial and will plan on mediation. The mediation date was scheduled for February in 2011.

Attorney for the four plaintiffs, Jamal Parris, Anthony Flagg, Spencer Legrande and Maurice Robinson, B.J. Bernstein spoke with media after the status hearing and discussed why they agreed to mediation.

B.J. Bernstein said they are ready to move forward with the case.

The four plaintiffs allege they were sexually coerced by Bishop Eddie Long into sexual relationships while they were still minors and under his spiritual authority. Though the men were young they were at the age of consent at the time the alleged sexual abuse occurred.

The scandal is one of many that has rocked the Christian church and left many critics doubting the authenticity or sincerity of Christian leaders.

Bishop Eddie Long has denied the charges and says that though he was a mentor and traveled with the men in question, he never did anything sexual with them.

Update- Long Provides  Information About Alleged Abuse and Asks Judge to Dismiss Case. 11/2/10

According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Bishop Eddie Long

has asked for  four lawsuits to be dismissed and judgment to be entered in his favor.  Long denied  allegations that he coerced  four young men into sexual relationships. He said "the plaintiff's claims of sexual misconduct are not true."

In court filings, Long admitted taking  the men on trips, but denied the complaints of sexual contact. He did however,  admit to hugging some of the men. He said  " it is common among his church congregation for members to hug each other and hug the Bishop". He also admitted that the men called him "Daddy," "Bishop" and "Granddaddy," but said many members of his congregation called him similar names.

Other allegations Long addressed were those of lavishing gifts on the young men.  He confirmed he  did  give the plaintiffs gifts, including cars, and helping them financially, but again denied it was in exchange for sex. He said he has "provided sporadic financial assistance," and he routinely pays for rent and other expenses for New Birth members.

Regarding the now infamous cell phone communications; In the filings, Long admitted to speaking on the phone with the men, but said he could not recall who initiated the  calls.

Update - Judge in the Bishop Long Case Receives Letter Requesting HIV/Aids Test

Reuben Armstrong is so concerned with the alleged Long sex abuse, in which Long is accused of "grooming young boys for homosexual relationships",  that he has sent a letter to the judge who will be hearing the sexual abuse cases brought against Bishop Long. The letter is requesting that Bishop Long be ordered to take a HIV/AIDS test, along with other tests for sexually transmitted diseases.

A press release that from Reuben Armstrong reads:

Dallas base Talk Show Host Reuben Armstrong has requested via a Certified Letter to

DeKalb County State Court Judge Johnny Panos requesting that the court mandate certain medical tests due to the allegations that have been brought against Bishop Eddie Long.

Armstrong is requesting that the Judge issue a court order for Bishop Eddie Long to submit to HIV, syphilis and hepatitis testing. The letter from Armstrong is not accusing Bishop Long of having such diseases , but if these allegations are true, there may be a chance that Bishop Long exposed himself and others to such diseases.

The Main Concern and Reasons for this request is:

That these possible sexual allegations went on for years with several partners.

If the tests are POSITIVE, it would be IMPERATIVE that all possible victims be tested.

There is history of young men being infected and dying from former Atlanta Bishop JD Husband.

Armstrong has been a noted voice exposing Bishop Eddie Long after two youth Pastors from Bishop Eddie Long’s church contacted him stating that they had witnessed Bishop and other ministers of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church having sex with young boys.

Update- Long's alledged sex abuse was exposed in 2006

Talk show host and best selling author,   Reuben Armstrong,  is said to have been the first to expose Bishop Eddie Long as a sexual predator back in 2006.  Reuben based his best selling book "Snakes in the Pulpit" on alleged revelations of Long's sexual abuse of young  boys. Read below for full story appearing on  Examiner.com (Hartford)

Reuben Armstrong,  talk show host and best selling author, tells the Examiner that this is not  the first time allegations have been made against Bishop Eddie Long regarding the sexual abuse of young men in his church.

Bishop Eddie Long alleged sexual predator was exposed in 2006 by Reuben Armstrong Talk Show Host

Armstrong reports that in 2006 the alleged sexual abuse of the young men by Bishop Long is something he discussed on his talk show. This occurred after youth pastors from Long‘s church came to Armstrong for help.

Armstrong addresses this type of abuse in his best selling book, “Snakes in the Pulpit”, which was on the Essence Magazine best seller list for over a year.

Armstrong has talked and wrote about the alleged “child predator” Eddie Long to the point where people blamed him for starting rumors.

Two youth pastors from th New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, contacted Reuben Armstrong in 2006 because of his well known status of going after the truth. The youth pastors where looking for help from Armstrong.

They wanted Armstrong to bring to light what they had witnessed at the New Birth Church, especially with their Pastor, Bishop Eddie Long.

The youth pastors claimed that Bishop Eddie Long was having sex with some of the boys in the church. They were very upset about this and did not know what to do. They reported that there were others aware of this situation, but people were afraid to come out and talk about it.

The youth pastors allegedly “feared for their lives” if their names were to be known. The youth pastors told Armstrong that Bishop Long was grooming some of the young boys he had chosen to become his sexual partners.

They reported Long lavished the young boys with gifts and had even taken them on trips.  Bishop Long was also paying, for some of the college tuitions for these boys.

The youth pastors believed that Long knew which children to target, Armstrong said. He was told that the boys were children of single mothers with no father figure in their lives. Long would treat them like they were his own sons. Once he gained their full trust and love, Long would allegedly start the sexual abuse.

Armstrong says that “Eddie Long is a very powerful man in the south, and the youth pastors were afraid to go to the authorities.” “The ramifications for coming out with this story could be long reaching and that scared the youth pastors,” said Armstrong.

Armstrong made this a very frequent topic on his talk show, but because Bishop Long has tens of thousands of followers and is considered such a religious icon, no one believed this and accused Armstrong of starting rumors about Long.

With the four young men filing lawsuits claiming that Bishop Eddie Long sexually abused them, people are starting to realize there may be some truth in all of this. The lawsuits may just be the start of Bishop Eddie Long’s demise.

Armstrong believes that “Bishop Long is a child predator” and he has written about this in his books and he has talked for years about this on his talk show.

One of the Bishop Eddie Longs alleged victims comes forward. Click to see Video below

Article provided by foxnews.com

One of four young men accusing a prominent Georgia pastor of sexual abuse describes in an interview with the Atlanta Fox affiliate a love-hate relationship with a man he once called "daddy."

See Video Here

The alleged victim, Jamal Parris -- speaking out for the first time since the men's civil lawsuits against Bishop Eddie Long -- told the TV station he joined Long's New Birth Missionary Baptist Church as a 14-year-old with no father figure. He said Long wanted Parris to call him "daddy" and to trust him with spiritual guidance.

"I loved him," Parris, now 23, said. "I always have loved him for what he taught me. How he left us hurt more than anything else in my life."

The lawsuits filed by Parris and the three others accuse Long of using scripture and church money to sexually seduce them since childhood, MyFoxAtlanta.com reported.

"I feel like David against Goliath," Long told the TV station.

Now Parris calls Long a "monster." He claims in his lawsuit Long used scripture to justify sex and lavished the boys with money, cars, jewelry, trips in his private jet and even homes -- sometimes with funds from the church coffers.

"You finally have a father that you've always wanted for and always dreamed of," Parris said. "He would just walk away from you if you don't give him what he wants. So you end up turning into something you never thought you would be, which is now a slave to a man that you love."

Long, through his lawyer, has called the allegations in the lawsuits false. Parris says it is all true.

"So, while the media look at us, how could grown men let them touch him? This man has manipulated us since childhood," Parris said in the TV interview. "He was our father. We loved him."

Looking into the camera and addressing Long, Parris said: "You are not a man, you are a monster."

Parris said on MyFoxAtlanta.com that when the bishop lost interest in sex and he would set his sights on other younger men, leaving the older boys behind.

"The man turned his back on us when he had no more need for us," Parris said. "That's not a father, that's a predator."
