Unless you've been living in a cave, you have probably been bombarded with all the latest news on the fastest growing group of moms in America, women over 40 having babies. We are aware that the age for teen pregnancy is getting younger. But who knew there was another group at the very opposite of the pole. Giving birth beyond 40 is becoming much more common these days. Forty, 50, and even some documented cases of 60 year olds, are giving birth. Once thought to be significantly dangerous pregnancy, doctors now say older moms can be just as healthy as younger ones. But they still add that the biggest concern is the increased risk of delivering a baby with chromosomal defects.
So how old is too old, to have a baby? I have pondered this question as well, wondering if I would, in a few years, like to have another child. There were a few thoughts I had on the topic; some legitimate, others..er..well just read below:
Cons for having a child in the 40s:
- How would it affect my health?
Would I live to see the child grow up?
Would I have the energy to raise the child?
- Would I become a premature burden on the child?
- In this economy should I add an extra financial burden?
- How would I feel having a child and a potential grandchild the same age?
- If my husband and I succumb to a premature death, who would raise the child?
- Isn't this the time my husband and I are suppose to be relaxing and enjoying life?
- Would someone mistake me for the child's grandmother?
Pros for having a child in the 40s
-
children keep you young!
-
being older and wiser, I would be better able to guide a child in the right direction.
-
Life has helped me to have better patience
-
I would be forced to take better care of myself
-
If I breastfed and get saggy breast, who would care at my age?
...Ok that last one can be stricken from the list. No woman wants saggy breast.
It is still a eye-popping site to see an older woman pregnant. But it shouldn't be. After all, if you've read the Bible, you know Sarah and Abraham were both past 80 when Isaac was born. So how many women (and men) out there are willing to join the ranks?
