It began with a party invitation to  the 15-year-old from some young men she knew. She accepted the invitation, and took along her 7 year old stepsister. what transpired next is almost unfathomable-Not only did the older girl exchange sex for money,  she  received money from the men and agreed to allow them to "touch" the little girl.  The touching quickly escalated to sexual assault, followed by the  gang-rape of the 7 year old, by as many as seven men,  as her sister stood by and watched. Eventually the child was able to leave the apartment and was found crying by two women outside the apartment building.

Earlier, the parents had reported the girls missing. They had assumed the older child had run away and perhaps taken the little girl with her.

The police department have anounced  that they are taking this case as personal and will bring to justice all those involved. They will also seek to have the 15 old tried as an adult. But is this enough?

This country seems to have a habit of allowing those who prey on our children, to get by with essentially a slap on the wrist. Just look at the releases of repeat child offenders from state-to-state.  And  let's not even talk about the Catholic priest who for decades have abused their clergy positions, by gaining the trust of the very children they should be protecting, then pursuing sexual relations with them. They too have been pardoned, and in some cases, even  allowed to continue to practice as priests.

When will we wake up and finally hold child sex offenders accountable for their cruelty upon children? I am a Christian who follows the biblical principle of forgiveness. But such crimes against the youth stretches the boundaries of my compassion.  I am certainly NOT opposed to the death penalty is these cases.  Even President Obama has in past stated, in repsonse to the Supreme Court overturning the Louisiana death conviction of a man who so brutally raped an 8 year that she had to have surgery,

" I have said repeatedly that I think that the death penalty should be applied in very narrow circumstances for the most egregious of crimes...I think that the rape of a small child, six or eight years old, is a heinous crime and if a state makes a decision that under narrow, limited, well-defined circumstances the death penalty is at least potentially applicable, that that does not violate our Constitution....an assault on law enforcement’s efforts to punish these heinous felons for the most despicable crime. That there is a judge anywhere in America who does not believe that the rape of a child represents the most heinous of crimes, which is deserving of the most serious of punishments, is profoundly disturbing."

But according to deathpenaltyinfo.org,  only six states allow the death penalty for rape of a child; Texas, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Montana, Louisiana, and Georgia.  The other forty-four states  have barred the death penalty for child rape citing that is was "an excessive penalty for the rapist who, as such, does not take human life." WTH?  No, they may not take a human life but they take so much more from these precious little ones. They take away their joy, trust, innocence, self esteem, self worth, identity, childhood, their right to share their virginity with their spouses, their ability to enjoy intimacy, and in some cases, their ability to bear children.  It leaves them with feelings of shame, embarrassment, and guilt; basically they are scarred for life! But yet the supreme court deems capital punishment, for child rapists, too cruel? When is enough, enough?  Who are we protecting in this country, the child or the rapist?

STORY UPDATE

The New York Times reports 6 men have now been arrested in connection with the 7 year-old's assault.

Gregory Joseph Leary, 20,  and Tiemear Lewis, 19, both of Trenton, were arrested.

County prosecutor, Joseph L. Bocchini Jr., said his hoffice will seek to try 'at least' one of the three juveniles, ages 17, 14, and 13, as an adult.

The city's mayor, Douglas H. Palmer of Trenton, said "Good people came forward to try and get justice for this 7-year-old angel, who was bruttally gang-raped by pedophile animals.  Everyone that was responsible is still not arrested. Police won’t rest until we get every one.”

The child  told authorities that she only went to the party because she wanted to protect her  older sister.   Palmer said. Both girls had been on the blotters of various child welfare services. He also stated that he  met  with the little girl at his office and gave her a stuffed Easter bunny.  He went on to say  the family will soon be moved out of the area because “she will be stigmatized". Says the little girl, "Everybody’s staring at me. They know it’s me.”
